If you are looking to change the flooring in your home, then you may want to take a few minutes out to read on about what you need to consider when you are buying new flooring on a budget.
The market for flooring is now huge with selections such as laminate, hardwood flooring, carpet, tiles and more. Many of the ranges have a variety of options such as flooring thickness, colour and underlay, all of which can make a huge impact when it comes to the final finish on the flooring too. This is why you should take into consideration a range of factors when you are making your decision, the cheapest option is not always the best which I know sounds strange when you are on a budget!
Being on our money-saving journey has taught us many things and one of the key ones is that it is not always financially savvy to go for the cheapest options every time. Sometimes you have to invest a little more to get better quality and that is very true for things such as flooring.
Flooring can take up a big chunk of any renovation budget and when you start to factor in things such as underlay, grips/glue and fitting fees, you can see why it is such a big factor in any room. If you are unsure of the right flooring for your room it is always worth taking some time out to speak to the professionals, they will happily advise you whilst you are making your choices and getting it installed. We always pay for the professionals to lay our flooring too, we are investing so much into the flooring the last thing I want to do is ruin it by installing it incorrectly!
When planning your room and the flooring for the room, you may feel a little overwhelmed, here are a few things you will need to take a few things into account:
Upkeep – When you are looking at the costings of the flooring, you also need to consider the upkeep of the floor too. So things such as lino for example are easy to wash down and clean, and carpets can be cleaned using a carpet cleaner but some wooden flooring may need a little more TLC to ensure it is kept in good condition. Make sure you take this into consideration when you are working on your budget for the flooring.
Durability – With this being such a big investment, you want to make sure that it lasts in the room it is put! If you have a high traffic area, something like Engineered Herringbone Flooring may suit you better as it is likely to stand the traffic better than carpet for example. For places such as kitchens and even dining rooms, you may want to avoid carpet as this is likely to have a few items of food or drink dropped on it whilst you are cooking and eating dinner, especially if you have children!
Colour – If you have children, you may have a child that is going through a phase where pink for example is their favourite colour. When renovating though, try to steer away from the bright bold colours. This is just simply because although it may be their favourite colour now, in a few years it might not be the case. Although you can change the paint colour fairly cheaply, the flooring is not so easy to do. Neutral doesn’t need to be boring though, you can brighten up any room with rugs and soft furnishings!
We have always found it better to invest in good quality flooring at the start with the aim that it will last longer, making it better value for money overall. I know that it can sometimes feel like you are going against what you are trying to achieve, however, trust me when I say you don’t want to be paying out for flooring more than you need to. With kids this is always what happens if you don’t install the right flooring for the room!
It is also worth remembering that taking care of your flooring will also make it last longer. By using the right cleaning products on the flooring type you have and maintaining any care products that are needed, you will ensure that you get the best value for your flooring and it will stay looking like new for longer.
