What to do when you hit a bump in the road on your debt-free journey

The debt-free journey can be a long one. Everyone has a different journey, not only in monetary terms but also in terms of the length of the journey.

Now with anything, no journey is smooth, regardless of how long that journey is. But what exactly do you do when you hit a bump in the road on that journey.

For me, in the past, I would have stopped our journey. Deciding that there was a reason we had hit the wall and it was a sign not to carry on with it. Stepping away from the journey and have another go at a different time in our life.

Now I face the issues head-on.

There is never a right time to be on a debt-free journey, it is about making it the right time.

We are working on a 5-year plan, we know where we want to get to in those 5 years. Now that plan is based on current circumstances and predicted changes during those years. Though, what is going to happen should something happen that is not on the plan.

There are so many changes that could come in such as financial income to increase or decrease. There could be an unplanned financial emergency that we are unable to cover or we could just fall off the plan.

If you hit one of those things, here are my tips on how to stay focused during that time.

3 ways to focus when you are on a debt-free journey

  • Remember why you are on this journey – Don’t panic at this point. Take a time to step back and remind yourself why you started this journey and where you want to get to.
  • Learn to adapt – Life never goes to plan, don’t let this throw you. Learn to adapt and adjust to what is going on around you in your life. This will make it easier when that curveball gets thrown your way.
  • Don’t stop – This is the worst thing you can do if you are crawling to your end goal, it is better than not moving towards it at all.

If covid-19 has taught me anything this year, I have learnt that I am more determined than I give myself credit for. Now we are on this journey, I am more focused than ever to ensure we achieve our goals. So far we are on track but there is still a long way to go and who knows what is around the corner. The last year has shown that anything can happen, all we need to do is make sure we focus on getting to our debt-free goal in a way we can manage.

Everyone manages to save money and make money in their own way, we just need to focus on the ways that work best for us.
